Careful my friend, careful. There are plenty of private schools that are not, do not and never will recruit, pay for and subsidize an athlete to come to their school. I am one of those who works and coaches at a private school. I do not get paid extra. I do not and never have recruited. It is expected that I take on co-curricular duties. I love coaching, I am passionate about coaching, I coach hard. All my players are " home grown" so to speak. No one comes to my school to play " ball". Are their schools that take advantage of their situation and basically cheat? For sure but don't think for a minute there aren't public schools running basketball academies and such that are quietly recruiting there as well. Yes I agree some private schools are grossly violating BCSS rules and regulations. But do not lump all of us in that group. The vast majority of successful basketball programs happen because of long standing coaches that are willing to put in the work. That you can take to the bank. The current BCSS Basketball Championships in Langley are arguably the greatest high school sports spectacle in this country. Separate private and public? that goes down the drain in an instant. Careful what you wish for.

the last two that posted... why dont you both show your real name then and stop hiding it if thats all true? my guess is its not and you are simply saying the necessary words that will make private schools look good. Regardless if you dont do any of that as you say... the fact remains what you have said "Yes I agree some private schools are grossly violating BCSS rules and regulations." If you agree then lets DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT...

I find it incredibly confusing as to why private schools in BC are treated as if they are the same as public schools in regard to sports. The goal for sports is to include fair competition where the playing field is even and so each team can work their way to being a champion. How is the playing field fair when Private schools have access to funds that the public schools simply do not get. Kids are getting PAID coaching which means that the coaches are giving much more effort because they do not wish to lose their job as head coach, while 90 percent of public schools rely on volunteer coaching which more often then not has these coaches not giving any practice time and not giving any effort. Saint Georges St pats Vancouver Collage are all having their kids flown to other countries to compete and train with the very best... HOW? because they have a shit load of money to spend purely on their sports. If the argument is that Private schools should be in provincials then FINE let them play in the Big Tourney, BUT when it comes to the sea to sky tournament where schools are being kicked out due to a private school placing higher then them then that's simply unfair advantage.
without a doubt there is money being paid to the committee which make these types of decisions. its wrong to all the kids that cant afford to pay $40,000 a year to attend these schools and the kids who are not extremally athletic at an early age that get a scholarship from these schools. If people are not aware there is a lot and i mean A LOT of recruiting happening to these schools and if anyone doubts me then ill tell you I was one of those kids where the schools coaches approached me and recruited me to come to VC. YES IT IS WRONG, YES IT STILL HAPPENS.
I don't understand how these private schools can still get away with this. nobody understands this better then the public schools that cant find a way out of losing due to all their kids in their area getting taken away to private schools. IF YOU WANT THEM TO GET INTO PROVINCIALS AND PLAY AGAINST PUBLIC SCHOOLS THEN MAKE THEM THEIR OWN ZONE TOURNAMENT ALREADY.
they can afford to fly around and play all the other private schools in their OWN league and have their own tournament set up... ITS ABOUT TIME PEOPLE STOP LETTING THIS STUPIDITY SLIDE LIKE THIS.
Nobody can convince me that this sort of thing is fair... VSB is NOT PROTECTING THEIR KIDS AND THEIR SCHOOLS... they are simply terrible at their jobs and idiots at making decisions. public schools are even being forced out of the gyms by VSB staff and the amount of red tape just to get any kind of gym time is enormous. It makes me sick and this is the reason basketball in BC is not growing. They are killing off any public school interest in having any kind of competitive program. some schools deal with is and some dont. All I know is.... BC SCHOOL SPORTS DOESNT GIVE TWO FUCKS ABOUT THE KIDS... probably because THEIR kids go to a private school... SMDH
REPLYING TO THIS...
I have been coaching at St Pats AS A VOLUNTEER for 22 years. Before my children were born and still doing it after my children have graduated highschool. I get a gas stipend for coaching, and since gas is at an ultimate high, the amount I get hasn't changed since 2001. I don't complain about the money I don't get. I rent out the gym, yes I pay for it to train kids. If you have ever been to St. Pats, the gym is tiny, smaller than some elementary school gyms and we make due for what we have. For the 22 years that I have been a coach at St Pats, plus the 4 years I was there as a player, attended the elementary school, assistant coached right after highschool for 3 years before moving to the Philippines to pursue my own basketball career, the people and community has not changed. We take kids that just want to be at the school, for religious regions, being catholic, some are not catholic and understand the community we have built and want to be a part of it. Many have left and have gone to those other mentioned private schools for whatever reason. Those who have stayed, we develop to be the best basketball players they can be but also to be the best they can be in whatever they do in life. If you are in our program, we will do our best get the best out of you. Luckily, for the last 5 years we have been fortunate enough to have kids in our catchment that work really hard and to be honest, they look exactly the same, ethnicity wise and height wise as the kids I have had 22 years ago. We don't have much at St Pats in terms of facilty and to see our name in line with the other private schools is absolutely ridiculous. We do not give out "ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIPS". The school actually needs money so every child pays the tuition fee to go to this school. We cant compete with those other schools with their beautiful gyms, football field (we dont even have a field, just a patch of grass) weight rooms, theatre rooms, east wing, west wing etc. But we will do our best to compete on the court. We have taken our lumps over the decades, no complaints, lost to those schools by 50+ but its ok, get back in the gym and put in the work. All our wins was because of hard work. 90% of the kids that play on our team come from our catholic school catchment schools or just live a few blocks away from the school. Just so people are aware, when we won the AAA in 2022, I only had 9 players tryout for that team (everyone made it). I had to run at practice to make 10 so we can scrimmage. We added grade 10's at the end of the year. This last season, I had 11 kids tryout, so everyone made it then added grade 10's at the end of the year as well. We have been doing that since I started coaching at St Pats.
I will agree we have had the great opportunity to run a program where not just St Pats kids but kids from other schools join us to play basketball at other countries. Well, I was fortunate enough to play in the Philippines so the connection and relationships I have gained is huge. Those players I played with or against are now coaches and so we get to travel and play over there. This has nothing to do with the school. The parents, not just St Pats parents have done a lot of fund raising and have worked OT at their current jobs to make this possible for their child to play and travel with us.
My point is this...please don't add St Pats as one of the private schools that just gets kids to come because of basketball or because we have money to give out athletic scholarships etc. Not one student athlete at St Pats has been given a "scholarship". We are NOT that by any stretch of the imagination. There are bursaries parents can apply for but that is given to a small percentage of families regardless of sport or whatever activity. The funds for that is very low and sometimes not enough to help families. The costs to go to our school is no where close to those other schools. We only have 450 students go to our school boys and girls. We chose to play up to AAA, our numbers are very close to being A but we want to challenge our kids to be better. Win or lose.

I have nothing to hide. I put my name out there, most private schools have dedicated coaches that don't get paid and do it for the love of the kids, community and the school. I know a lot of public school coaches that do the same and do their best to help kids have the best experience that they can remember for the rest of their lives. Most of the coaches these days in public and private schools are community coaches mostly because this new generation of teachers just want their paycheck and once its 3pm, they go home. Its rare to find teacher/coaches these days and for those that do...more power to you and more power to the community coaches as well.

Saint pat pays off choach from public school to lose so they can get an easy route to provincial tournaments Whatever that means "yeah right"? We pay off the public school coaches? With what money? thats a joke if ever heard one. Ask Dover, Byng, Argyle and LV Rogers coaches and tell me what they say. I know they wanted to beat us just like we wanted to beat them. Us coaches are competitive, thats why we are all trying to win the banner for our schools. Easy route? I think you forgot we had one of our best players break his leg in half in the quarter finals last year. Tell me that was easy? Tell the kid his journey to come back a year later and become a 1st team provincial all star was easy. You have to be out of your mind to say we had an easy route. We just worked really hard, can't that be acknowledged? I guess not smh!

I volunteer my time at a VSB Secondary school, and try my best to give the team the same access to good basketball as the private schools provide. For those schools that don't have support, I hate it for you. IMO, it's a crystal clear example of inequality. Serious question to the original poster, though: WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?? We had a principal come into the elementary school last year. she completely gutted the sports program that we worked hard to build over the last decade. I took my concerns to the VSB and have felt mostly unsupported. Most of the community who thanked me profusely over the last 10 years for the hard work, have pretty much disappeared and showed themselves to be uninterested in putting up a fight. Passivity at it's finest! It's one thing to come on an anonymous forumn to highlight and complain about the unfairness. It's something completely different to put your money where your mouth is and fight for your message. For the record, I'd be more than happy to have a go with VSB. Come at me bro!

This may be off topic a bit but I remember in the 90s that in order to go to the Agrodome your team had to fund raise . Kids had to get out onto the community and learn what the cost of things they wanted were. But the cost was still reasonable as it was high school sports and most communities and businesses bought into that. Fast forward and teams from outside the lower mainland now charge each player to even join the team as the costs have gone so far out of reach. Maybe the Education Ministry should realize the ompoy of all these sports in making tomorrow's leaders and fund amateur sports properly. Many kids and there parents can not afford 2k plus for there kids to play. I think that with the huge growth in population that It may be time to divide the province into zones and have them send there best. This would apply to private and public but the public schools would be funded by the government this evening out the money factor. We would also get more kids playing because they would not have to worry about money or so much travel. Just a thought.
